Design 1834 12 Meter Intrepid

Intrepid was built of wood by the Minneford Yacht Yard of City Island, New York and launched in 1967. She was considered a "breakthrough" design. She was heavily based on tank test results and a real effort to reduce wetted surface. The crew was moved below decks in great part including winches and deck gear which meant her boom could be considerably lower. You will note the boom in various heights in these images, based on changes that were made from time to time over the years. The image at bottom shows her in her original position.

She was successful in her defense of the Americas Cup twice, winning in 1967 and 1970. Click here for more information about the Sparkman & Stephens 12-meters.
